Kyrgyzstan Rehabilitates Victims of Political Repression

News:

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has approved a law on the rehabilitation of citizens who suffered from political repression during the Soviet period. This document covers those who were convicted for political reasons under the Criminal Code of the RSFSR, which was in effect in Kyrgyzstan until 1961. This was reported by TRT.

According to this law, political repression includes decisions taken between 1917 and 1953 based on documents “On the Red Terror,” the fight against Basmachi, signs of kulak economy, and other acts.

The bill, which provides for the rehabilitation of citizens who suffered from political repression during the Soviet period, was initiated in January 2023 and in December 2024 the Kyrgyz parliament Zhogorku Kenesh adopted the corresponding bill aimed at restoring the rights of the repressed.

Comment:

It should be noted that in the Central Asian countries, the process of rehabilitation of persons repressed for political reasons during the Soviet period began after independence in the 1990s and continues to this day. In Uzbekistan, work is actively underway to rehabilitate victims of political repression. To date, the total number of acquitted persons has reached 856 people, most of whom are the so-called “Basmachi”. In Kazakhstan, the process of rehabilitation of victims of political repression is also ongoing: in 1993, the law “On the rehabilitation of victims of mass political repression” was adopted, which became the basis for restoring the rights of repressed persons.

It is noteworthy that the regimes of the Central Asian countries, rehabilitating the victims of the “red terror”, are pursuing image goals rather than sincerely wanting to restore justice. After all, they themselves are doing the same thing in their countries, and sometimes on a scale no smaller than the communists. Even Kyrgyzstan, which until recently was considered a relatively safe place in Central Asia, where people could peacefully practice Islam, after Sadyr Japarov came to power turned into a cruel dictatorship, blindly copying Russian repressive legislation.
