Ramadan Series Heroic Sahaba (ra): Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (ra)

The Ummah Voice Podcast is pleased to present during the month of Ramadan Heroic Stances of the Sahaba (ra). Sahaba (ra) who had a positive impact in changing the course of events, and set an example for many members of the Islamic Ummah.

One Sahaba that can be attributed for his heroic stance is Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (ra). He was a companion and cousin of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), and an elder brother of Ali (ra). Ja’far was among the early companions to accept Islam. He had a great status role in spreading and informing people about Islam. He migrated from Mecca to Abyssinia to escape persecution due to the extreme tortures that were endured upon the early Muslims from Quraysh. People from Quraysh went to Negus and told him to send the Muslims back to Mecca but Negus replied that he had promised the Muslims protection. Negus asked Ja’far from what religion they followed and Ja’far replied that they were an uncivilized people and that Allah (swt) sent down a Messenger and ordered us to worship one God, commanded us to speak the truth, be faithful to our engagements, keep ties of kinship, and refrain from crimes and bloodshed. He forbade us to devour the property of orphans. Ja’far then said we believed in his (saw) message.

Quraish said to Negus that Muslims did not respect Isa (as) or Sitna Maryam. Negus became infuriated and asked Ja’far (ra) to reply to these accusations. Ja’far (ra) then recited the first few verses of Surat Maryam and upon hearing this Negus wept until his beard became wet. Negus then said that he would never harm a Muslim.

As we can learn from this brief example of Ja’far (ra) that he learned Islam in order to teach it to others were from his teachings brought safety to the Muslims escaping Mecca to Abyssinia and was able to fend off accusations. We, Muslims and Dawah Carriers are supposed to learn about Islam, its manners, ideology, its way of life in order to show that truly and only Islam can resolve humankind from the corruptions of society, economic burdens, educational curriculum instilled only to dumb down our future generation. We have the responsibility to learn our Deen and spread its goodness the way Ja’far (ra) did. May Allah (swt) grant us beneficial knowledge in this life in order for it to shine on us on the Day of Judgement. Ameen Ya Allah!
