Following the Palestinian Authority's siege of the mosque, Hizb ut Tahrir members in Jenin teemed the door with the public appreciating their stance and the PA responded with arrests.

According to a member of the Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir in Palestine, Dr. Musab Abu Arqub, members of Hizb ut Tahrir had gathered at the door of small mosque after prayers at noon on Saturday, 24 Jumada II 1434 AH corresponding to 04 May 2013 following the siege of the PA's security forces and trying to prevent worshipers from leaving in an effort to prevent Hizb's rally against the Arab peace initiative which the Hizb previously announced through a press release and the media office's website.

Abu Arqub said that Hizb members left the mosque after the end of rally were met with applause from the crowd out of respect for them and their staunch positions that refused to succumb to the suppression of the PA seeking to impose political and intellectual tutelage on the people of Palestine.

The PA's security forces arrested an unspecified number of the Hizb's members including Honorable Abdul Rahman Zyoud (Abu Musab), preceding the rally was the arrest of Sheikh Walid Abu Khaled from his workplace.

One of the Hizb's members addressed the crowd stressing that the rulers were relying on the president in surrendering Palestine, and the Arab initiative is the completion to their surrendering of the blessed land and their protection of the Jewish entity's security.

On the Friday of "The Camps of Death": Call from Al-Sham Revolution to the Entire Muslim Ummah to Overthrow its Rulers and Pledge Allegiance to a Khaleefah for the Muslims, who Protects the Ummah and from whom the Ummah Fights Behind

Behold! The revolution of Al-Sham is crying out to the dead chivalry of the Muslim leaders to expose them as a whole, as they have united upon slaughtering it from vein to vein. They were not content with supporting the butcher Bashar regime and working on prolonging its existence despite the fact that it has collapsed almost entirely; nor were they content with their continued attempts of circumventing the revolution for the sake of aborting it before their rotten agent regimes are aborted by its success...

Is the Increase of Oil Prices for Lessening Subsidy?

  • Published in Analysis
  •   |

It is reported that the government decided to increase the oil price. It will be in the range of Rp. 6500 per liter. The government argues that the decision is taken to lessen the abundance of subsidy that is too large. Indeed, the subsidy of fuel in the State Budget of 2013 reached Rp. 274.7 Trillion. The government assesses the subsidy that all this time is more enjoyed by rich people. Really?

Based on the National Economic Survey 2010 there was 65% of poor and lower-middle people use oil, 27% of middle class, 6% upper-middle and only 2% of the rich. From the total of vehicles, about 53, 4 million in 2010, in Indonesia, 82% of it is two-wheeled vehicles that are in majority owned by the lower-middle class. This shows that the lower-middle class is still dominant as a fuel consumer. So, the increase of fuel price will be surely become miserable for the people.

If the government sees the fuel subsidy is much enjoyed by rich class, he should be honest that the rich class who has no right to enjoy subsidy is not only the user of private car but also the industries that receive benefit from the leakage of fuel subsidy or smuggle the fuel to abroad. BPH (Oil and Gas Regulator) confessed that oil and gas subsidy that is enjoyed by industries or smuggled to abroad are very significant. It can be seen from the hundreds of revealed cases. Lessening the consumption of oil subsidy without lessening the consumption of one who has no right to enjoy will not lessen consumption significantly.

Furthermore, another rich class who enjoy the fuel subsidy are brokers who supply crude oil and fuel to Pertamina. It is not a secret that a handful of entrepreneurs play a role in this field continuously because they have connections with the power. Therefore, in order the subsidy is not enjoyed by the entrepreneurs, the government should have political will to support Pertamina to make a direct contract with the World Oil Producers and avoiding the intermediary company. It will make a very important impact; the price of crude oil can be lowered according to subsidy calculation of Pertamina.

Finally, oil and natural resources management must be ensured for people's interest. As it is known that in every joint meeting for the economy such as G-20, APEC and bilateral joint meeting, Indonesia is always "advised" to cut subsidy. Recently, the rating agencies also support government by saying "It is the time" to increase the oil price - precisely remove the subsidy.  The investment grade will be troubled is an effective threat to pressure the government. Whereas, the price of oil is not the only reason that influences the rate of competitiveness. There are still many problems to upgrade the competitiveness. Therefore, mapping the problem and considering policy choice must be scrupulous and prioritize national interest not foreign countries or foreign institution.

But in reality, all advices above are never done by the government. Pertamina is continuously allowed to use an intermediary company in selling and buying crude oil. Also, there is not a serious effort to anticipate the leakage and the smuggling of oil. Even though the government knows that the lower-middle class is the main consumer but they still want to increase the oil price. Those all show that the policy to increase the oil price is not for saving the state budget for the sake of people but it is for granting foreign interest through liberalization in the downstream sector. The goal is how to make the domestic selling price equal with the international price. It is an awaited moment for foreign corporations because they can trade freely in the country without subsidized oil.

Garissa Police Threatened with Legal Action over Abuse

  • Published in News & Comment
  •   |

News:

The Star newspaper reported on Monday 29/04/2013 that a human rights group in Garissa has threatened to take legal action against the government over alleged harassment and torture on local residents by police. Northern Forum for Democracy spokesman Khalif Abdi Farah said the organization has enough evidence to back allegations of rights abuses by officers during the ongoing security operations in the town. "It is very unfortunate that as we are speaking, hundreds of innocent people are nursing injuries inflicted on them by police officers. The officers  have been secretly picking up some individuals then taking them at some secret locations and afterwards  torture  them on allegations that they are terror suspects," said Khalif. He claimed a high school student is among those tortured by officers. His statement comes just two days after Muslim clerics also cried foul over the manner in which the operation in Garissa was being carried out. Speaking on Friday 26th, the clerics' spokesman Sheikh Hussein said police had resorted to "harassing and victimizing the locals under the disguise of looking for criminals". North Eastern PPO Charlton Mureithi however dismissed the allegations stating that security personnel have acted professionally during the operation. The massive operation to find those responsible for a spate of killings by unknown assailants in Garissa County kicked off last week following the fatal shooting of ten people in a hotel on April 18.

Commentary:

The policy of harassment of Muslims under the guise of fighting terrorism has become the norm in Kenya. Any crime committed in Muslim dominated areas is always branded as terrorism while same or more serious crimes in non-Muslim dominated areas are branded as normal crimes! This gives the police an escape route not to do investigations and grant them blanket powers to conduct security operations in secrecy from public scrutiny. Surprisingly, most of the arrested suspects from such operations are always refugees!! Following the Garissa incident, the Standard on 30/4/13 reported the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo as terming the ongoing operation in Garissa a ‘successful story'. How can you term such violence a success when people are nursing wounds from police brutality? We are being told that police are now studying bank accounts of some of the ‘suspects' arrested in the operation and one of them is suspected of having ‘illegal' Sh70 million in his bank account in Mwingi town. This is usually a tactic used to extort money from businessmen using threats of being branded a terrorism financier. The police operation that started a week ago has seen more than 500 ‘suspects' arrested, most of them being refugees. The most we will hear from such arrests will be deportations and not murder prosecutions for the killings that occurred.

Such operations disguised as fighting terrorism are not the first to be conducted in the area. The town has borne the brunt of security operations since the time of secession struggle in the late 60s. It is also the main town of a region most neglected by successive governments. On November 22nd 2012, the Kenya Defense Forces through spokesman Col Cyrus Oguna denied claims they harassed residents of Garissa and burnt property while hunting down assailants who had killed three soldiers. This is despite video footage and eyewitness account of the rampage by the soldiers. As the spokesman was denying the claims, the former Minister of State for Defense, Yusuf Haji quickly distanced himself from the chaos, saying he did not know who sanctioned the operation by KDF in the town thus confirming the allegations that they actually took place. Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim and nine other legislators condemned the soldiers and stated "The women have been raped, schoolchildren shot yet it is a failure by the Government to track down suspected Al-Shabaab members suspected to have committed the killings (of the three soldiers)" "Right now the entire Garissa is in tatters, millions have been lost after the military officers went burning businesses in the town" These are the hypocritical leaders who dine with the enemies of Muslims and come out to fake sympathy when tragedy strikes the Ummah. As usual with such incidents, no conclusive intelligence has been gathered on exactly what causes insecurity in the region. The County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim says movement of contraband goods is the problem. Detectives in town say a booming black market could be the main cause of the incessant violence while a probe team linked the attacks to rising cases of ‘radical' Islam.

Despite the violence meted out on residents of the town, they still support the system that oppresses them. During the just concluded elections, residents of the region mostly voted for the governing Jubilee Coalition which has now turned its security forces against them. Though a majority of the residents are Muslims, they are yet to realize that it is only Islam that will be a solution to the perennial problems they face of insecurity, drought and discrimination. Muslims must realize that democratic systems are a fraud that promises paradise while delivering hell and they will never live in peace in a Kufr system. It is only a Khilafah "Caliphate" state that will promise and deliver as the leader is guided by divine laws and fears being accounted by the Creator.
