 Nafsiya Reflections: Building Yourself Up

Welcome to this week’s episode of Nafsiyah Reflections: Building Yourself Up

Who is the person you are striving to be?

We all have goals and dreams we are trying to accomplish in our lives and the closer we get to the goal, the more we feel better about ourselves. But could it possible that we may be doing something counterproductive? Something that is going to add a greater distance between us and our goals? And what is the proper way of growing closer to our goals? Is there a way that gives us a bigger boost?

Now, there are two things that are actually counterproductive. The first is actually something we see quiet often... we see it all over social media. It could be when scrolling through Instagram or Facebook. Sometimes we see YouTube videos for it as well... it’s about boasting about our accomplishments. Flaunting it for others to see. Making all your reward in front of Allah (swt) go for nothing. Causing you to not only lose in the Dunya but to see your potential reward on the Day of Judgment in mountains, then seeing those mountains crumble right before your eyes!

Flaunting is a path to Arrogance (Kibr) And Allah says:

(وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ )

“And do not turn your nose up to people, nor walk pridefully upon the earth. Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful." [Surat al Luqman 31:18]

One who shows off with arrogance, will have a harsh punishment in the hereafter! Those ones do not even get to smell Paradise! For all the good they have done has been for nothing! Instead, they receive a severe punishment, into the hell fire, and there is no turning back from it! Allah Yultuf! may we never be of those who have pride...

The second act that is counterproductive is actually the opposite of boasting... it’s actually to put yourself down. To make yourself seem like you didn’t accomplish anything. When doing this, you do avoid being prideful, but you turn off your energy. For it eventually leads you to think that whatever you do is pointless. Then you fall into yeah, (Hopelessness), which is not a characteristic of a Muslim. No matter what hardship, no matter what you go through, becoming hopeless is never what a Muslim falls into. For Allah (swt) says in Surat Yusuf, Ayah 87:

(إِنَّهُۥ لَا يَا۟يْـَٔسُ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ)

"for no one loses hope in Allah’s mercy except those with no faith.”

What should you do with your accomplishments? What is it that you can do that will have you avoid pride and hopelessness? Should you just accomplish something and sit back and be happy that you did? No, that is also not a way to succeed... the way to succeed is by simply building up your accomplishments. Like blocks!

Take each accomplishment you make and stack them on top of each other to Build yourself closer to Allah (swt). And in doing this, it is important to put the intention that all you do and all you accomplish is for Allah (swt)! For when you place that intention, you do not only gain this dunya... you gain the pleasure of Allah. Which will give you Barakah in all that you do. Soon enough, you will enjoy collecting your accomplishments... not boasting about them. Keeping them between you and Allah (swt). And seeing how beautiful your accomplishments are on the day of judgment. Now, what is the next block you are going to build?

May Allah bless us in all that we do!
