News Right Now: Separating Politics from Deen

On November 11th, Austria announced the shocking decision to take draconian measures against its Muslim population by banning all activities associated with political Islam.

Austranian Chancellor, Kurz made the announcement in a Tweet, leaving the specifics of the measures undefined - yet making clear that every kind of Islamic activism will be severely restricted.

Triggered by the scenes of displaced families fleeing western invasions and interference in the Muslim world; a toxic nationalist sentiment has been on the rise all across Europe. This in turn has led to an increase in Islamophobia, where facing hate crime and discrimination has become the norm for Muslims of every diaspora - and the belief that Islam is a religion at odds with contemporary society is accepted without condition.
In Austria alone there had been a doubling of Islamophobic incidents in 2019, with 1,050 cases of anti-Muslim hate crime.

In the fight against Islam, Austria had previously closed down associations or mosques deemed to play a role in so called ‘radicalisation’ and enabled the public to report even unfounded suspicions on an online platform. This is likely to continue, along with the creation of a central register of imams, which will enable yet another tier of state surveillance.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's cabinet also agreed to proposals that include the ability to keep individuals convicted of terror related incidents behind bars for life.. the electronic surveillance of people suspected of extremism, and the deportation of individuals suspected of political activism.

What exactly ‘extremist’ behaviour is, is ill defined, broad and subject to constant change, yet Chancellor Kurz said “even if people have served their sentences, and are not yet seen as being completely deradicalised, the government reserves the right to change legislation and keep them in jail”.

The West has long been aware that Islam is much more than a simple code of ethics and personal beliefs. So its efforts to separate the political aspect of the Deen from society have manifested in many ways for several decades. Yet the popularity of Islam’s virtuous and endearing way of life continues to draw millions of people in the west to its holistic solutions.

As the Ottoman Khilafah was abbolished, the colonial powers who had spent a century orchestrating this, tried to ensure that politics would always be separated from Islam’s spiritual aspect... and that the modern Muslim nations would uphold a purely secular rule. This resulted in the removal of the criterion of halal and haram from the political sphere, forcing the discourse around the objectives, responsibilities and motivations of governance to stem from the perspective of seeking benefit and securing freedoms - just as the Western nation states did.

Notwithstanding the creation of these unholy hybrid governments in the Muslim world, the colonial west have since gone on to dictate a mentality of secularism among the Muslim populations wherever they reside ever since.

This is apparent in the last two decades that have seen European nations, Australia, America and much of Central Asia, go against their own freedoms to make changes to legislation. These have included laws preventing women from following the Islamic dress code and restrictions on the freedom of speech. Likewise the silencing and sidelining of those involved in the work for an Islamic political system to exist in the Muslim world - and now in Austria, the criminalisation to even participate in Islamic political activism, which could easily apply to charitable and social work too - is a continuation of our colonial experience.

All this and the Left’s muscular liberalism that forces communal acceptance of western values, has been under the guise of preventing extremism. Maintaining false narratives developed by right wingwestern think tanks, like ‘the conveyor belt to terrorism’ theory, are in essence populist propaganda, which they hope will serve only to remove Islamic political thought from the Muslim Ummah for good.

All this shows that the idea of Islam being understood, let alone presented and existing as an alternative ideologocal way of life is completely unacceptable to the Capitalist nations who uphold secularism as a highly progressive principle. The Islamic legal framework however is based on the divine Shariah laws, which apply to men and women in all aspects of life... political, economic, social and personal; defining relationships, norms and values, detailing responsibilities, areas of cooperation and boundaries, domestically and internationally.

This political aspect of Islam is under attack not only due to its obvious superiority to Capitalism, which is crumbling under its own precepts - but also because it is capable of liberating Muslims from the shackles of colonialism and actualising their own political destiny.
Strangely it seems that the imperialist states would rather suffer the consequences of becoming ideologically barren and economically irrevelant, than acknowledging the great potential of Islam today.

Allah (swt) says:

“Verily, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, and so will they continue to spend it; but in the end it will become an anguish for them. Then they will be overcomed. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto Hell.” [Anfal-36]
